Tragedy in Pop: Joshua Gage

"So, what are you doing tonight?"

Until January 09,

Gage’s vibrant depictions of tragic events in history portray ominous scenes in a startling palette suggesting the iconography of the events. In one scene, KKK members are taking a stroll during the day—the idea is alarming by automated response, however in bubble gum pinks and powder blues, the image triggers confusion of the senses. The automation of response in an unorthodox approach to style, color and subject matter facilitates a questionable reaction.

The artist is presenting an approach of how intellectual and emotional expectations of [tragic events] influence our perceptions. By prompting the viewer to explore expectations of automated response, he is questioning what happens to the subject so routinely experienced in the language of gravitas when it is presented in frivolity. It is the proposition of the series that the human experience can be at once both powerful and perfunctory visceral and dismissive. While the power and viscera may be appropriate, they may not be genuine. His goal is not a more accurate perception, it is not even necessarily a different perception—it is simply a more endogenous perception.

Satellite of Love: Randy Polumbo

Until December 19,
Polumbo recontextualizes objects, ideas and technologies, disorienting yet deeply nourishing us upon entrance to his playful and provocative world. In Satellite of Love, the artist presents fresh works that take his approach to new heights in terms of elementally charged materials, provocative forms and rich symbolism. Tiny abstract flower videos pollinate walls and surfaces, and cast illuminated glass nipples sprout like mushrooms. Cast lead crystal Hermes Birkin bags are filled with blown glass simulations after mass market sex toys, which in turn are illuminated by tiny solar panels. Questions of beauty, libidinal economies, and propagation are spun from the contrast between our public faces and private appetites. Polumbo’s techno-organic garden crystallizes an altered perspective or, perhaps, illuminates a soulful path to our coordinates in the present.

Fischerspooner @ The MoMA

November 01, 06:00 - 09:00 PM

An evening-length work by New York artists Fischerspooner, “Inbetween Worlds” is a pop spectacle developed in conjunction with Fischerspooner’s new recording, Entertainment. The work runs continuously, with no clear beginning or end, on a large central stage, inviting the audience to view the piece from all sides. With source material provided by The Wooster Group and inspired by phenomena ranging from Japanese theater to the early years of the U.S. space program, this new performance continues Fischerspooner’s interest in exploring the spaces between art and entertainment, reality and fiction, intentions and mistakes.

Foreign Body

Until December 19
In Foreign Body, the viewer is confronted by ambiguous, fluid bodies; bringing attention to the notion that self identity is unstable and permeable. The fabrication of individual male bodies into multi-limbed hybrids, makes his exploration of the male form at once unsettling, yet weirdly beautiful. In this exhibition, the body is presented, not as a protective envelope that defines and unifies our limits, but as an organ of physical and psychological interchange between bodies and selves.

Antony Crossfield describes his work as closely related to the manual labor of painting. His artworks comprise of several points of view, of multiple images that are compressed into a single frame of meticulous construction. The illusion of wholeness masks an uncertain and fractured reality, that defies the Cartesian idea of a stable viewpoint. Importantly, his photographs do not embellish the male form with expected beauty, instead, their diversity and flaws are embraced, echoing the traditions of the grotesque. The resulting photographs elicit an intellectual response, but also one that is visceral and even physical.

Close Views (From a Distance)

Until November 21st

The five Philadelphia-based photographers exhibiting in this show look very closely at the world and at the photographs they produce. Susan Arthur-Whitson works literally in close-up range; the miniature objects she sets in ambiguous locales gain strength from her careful staging and technique. Blaise Tobia looks closely at the urban landscape and telling segments of material culture; he then finds complex formal and conceptual relationships within and among the resulting photographs. Similarly, Ditta Baron Hoeber looks intently at human interactions and then at the photographs she has made, finding forms, patterns, gesture, and other revealing elements. Judy Gelles’s primary subject is the social environment and her means of representation merges photographs and recounted stories into a formally and conceptually unified whole. Benjamin Pierce is concerned with form and its recognition; usually his forms derive from the human body. In the video work he has made for this show, the concept of human form extends to vocal and musical patterns as well.

"America for Sale" Exhibition

Until November 21, 2009

A project of SEA (Social-Environmental Aesthetics), America for Sale is an exhibition of photography, sculpture, video, and installation that addresses America’s spiraling national debt, struggling global economy, and the ramifications of our extravagant spending. The American economy (and the world economy) is under great duress. Due to federal spending, the accumulation of budget deficits, the controversial wars in the Middle East, the devastating impact of the decline of the real estate market, the failure of sub-prime mortgages, and the collapse of several banks, the status of America as a wealthy superpower is being challenged as the stability of our economy deteriorates. The United States is now relying heavily on foreign investment and a federal bailout (or “stimulus package”) to buoy the US economy. Our enormous debt, shaky stock market, and American reliance on fiscal support from abroad have eroded America’s authoritative place in global politics. Foreign countries are buying stakes in the United States – in our real estate, and in our debt. The nation has become a marketable commodity. What is at stake? What does the future hold? What can be done? The works in this exhibition explore the politics of money, establishing a potent, cynical and sometimes humorous critique of the global financial system. SEA and "America for Sale" conceived by Papo Colo. "America for Sale" curated by Herb Tam and Lauren Rosati.

Dress Codes: The Third ICP Triennial of Photography and Video

The Triennial is ICP's signature exhibition: a global survey of the most exciting and challenging new work in photography and video. The only recurring U.S. exhibition specializing in international contemporary photography and video, the Third Triennial will mark the closing cycle of ICP's 2009 Year of Fashion, a series of projects that critically examine fashion and its relationship to art and other cultural and social phenomena. Through the lens of fashion—in its broadest conception—the Triennial will look at the proliferation of photo- and video-based work exploring the uses of style, image, and personal presentation.

The theme of fashion encompasses a diverse range of practices and ideas, including explorations of identity and affiliation; the production, distribution, and consumption of images and goods; contemporaneity; age; gender; and global industry. The themes of the Triennial express the exuberance, wit, and astute social observation taking place within contemporary image-making. These artists variously explore fashion—whether in everyday dress, haute couture, street fashion, or uniforms—as a celebration of individuality, personal identity, and self-expression, and as cultural, religious, social, and political statements.
