Two weeks. That’s what the main character of this short film asks for. Coronado creates a tremendous impact as she powerfully documents everyday issues.

PRETEXTS Pretextos | Silvia Munt | Spain | 88 min. | 2008
Silvia Munt, one of Spain’s finest actresses, makes an impressive directorial debut with a film she describes as being “written by and for women” and for which she was named Best Director at this year’s Malaga Film Festival. The screenplay, written by Munt with Eva Baeza, offers intricate parallels and emotions as it examines the complex and contradictory lives of theater director Viena (Munt) and her husband Daniel (Ramon Madaula), a doctor in a geriatric clinic.

FutureFashion: Fashion Week's Green Kickoff

by Jasmin Malik Chua

Earth Pledge FutureFashion Collection

Calvin Klein, Givenchy, Ralph Lauren, and Versace aren't names you instinctively associate with eco-couture. But these white-hot superstars of fashion came together with designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Stella McCartney, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Jill Sanders, and Narciso Rodriguez on Thursday to kick off Fashion Week in New York City with a big, green bang.

Organized by Earth Pledge, FutureFashion was a dreamy display of one-of-a-kind creations using sustainable textiles, including organically grown natural fibers (such as hemp, silk, cotton, and wool), as well as newer materials such as bio-plastics and man-made cellulosics. "These materials are all selected because they reduce harmful chemical and energy use, and protect land resources for future generations," wrote Leslie Hoffman, Earth Pledge's executive director, in the event's program—printed on 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper with soy inks, of course.

Sponsored by Barneys New York, Lexus Hybrid, and Pure & Natural, FutureFashion minimized the impact of the event by using low-impact fabrics, Kumbuc wood for the runway (later returned to become furniture), as well as by serving local and organic food backstage. If you're in Manhattan, be sure to check out the looks from the show in the Barneys windows on Madison Avenue (till Feb 21). More photos from the show are below the fold. ::FutureFashion

Oh Snapity Snap Facebook might give you cancer!

How using Facebook could raise your risk of cancer

By Daily Mail Reporter

Social networking sites such as Facebook could raise your risk of serious health problems by reducing levels of face-to-face contact, a doctor claims.

Emailing people rather than meeting up with them may have wide-ranging biological effects, said psychologist Dr Aric Sigman.

Increased isolation could alter the way genes work and upset immune responses, hormone levels and the function of arteries. It could also impair mental performance.

facebook

The number of hours people spend interacting face-to-face has fallen dramatically since 1987 as electronic media use has risen

This could increase the risk of problems as serious as cancer, strokes, heart disease and dementia, Dr Sigman says in Biologist, the journal of the Institute of Biology.

Social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook allow people to keep in touch with friends over the web.

They can swap pictures, play games and leave messages which explain how their day is going.

But even though they are designed to bring people together, Dr Sigman said they were actually playing a significant role in people becoming more isolated.

Research suggested that the number of hours people spent speaking to others face-to-face had fallen dramatically since 1987 as the use of electronic media increased.

Interacting 'in person' had effects on the body not seen when writing emails, Dr Sigman claimed. Levels of hormones such as the 'cuddle chemical' oxytocin, which promotes bonding, altered according to whether people were in close contact or not.

'There does seem to be a difference between "real presence" and the virtual variety,' Dr Sigman added.

Some genes, including ones involved with the immune system and responses to stress, acted differently according to how much social interaction a person had with others.

Dr Sigman added: 'Social networking sites should allow us to embellish our social lives, but what we find is very different.

'It's not that I'm old fashioned in terms of new technology, but its purpose should be to provide a tool that enhances our lives.'

Dr Sigman told the Press Association: 'Social networking is the internet's biggest growth area, particular among young children.

'A quarter of British children have a laptop or computer in their room by the age of five and they have their own social networking sites, like the BBC's myCBBC. It's causing huge changes.'

Studies had shown that children taught via video broadcasts or DVDs did not learn as well as they did when given lessons by a real teacher.

Dr Sigman said 209 'socially regulated' genes had been identified, including ones involved in the immune system, cell proliferation and responses to stress.

Their activity may account for higher rates of inflammatory disease and other health problems seen in socially isolated individuals.

Electronic media was also undermining the ability of children and young people to learn vital social skills and read body language, said Dr Sigman.

'One of the most pronounced changes in the daily habits of British citizens is a reduction in the number of minutes per day that they interact with another human being,' he said.

'In less than two decades, the number of people saying there is no one with whom they discuss important matters nearly tripled.

'Parents spend less time with their children than they did only a decade ago. Britain has the lowest proportion of children in all of Europe who eat with their parents at the table. The proportion of people who work at home alone continues to rise.

'I am worried about where this is all leading.

'Social networking sites should allow us to embellish our social lives, but what we find is very different. The tail is wagging the dog. These are not tools that enhance, they are tools that displace.’

Sex On A Stick: American Apparel's Disco Pant

You have to give it to American Apparel for bringing quality along with slightly exaggerated prices to some devilishly stylish pieces. It seems some of us here at Lesheshi are convinced the Devil was in mind when AA whipped up the Disco Pant. This fart busting’, form fitting pair is one you will likely have in mind during your next visit to AA. Why you ask? Because it’s exactly like the pair Olivia Newton John wore when as a bad ass bitch in Grease and I mean really need I say more? Because we have plenty to share after being unable to restrain ourselves so without further a due, here is you will need to know about these puppies.

1-They cost $90.00

2-Material is incredible

3-Runs small, size up if your Assy and Curvy

4-Ridiculously slimming, no need to suck it all in.

5-Will pay for drinks themselves

6-Back pockets are sky high, so you end up with a bit of mom butt if you don’t wear the right top

7-Are a pain in the ass to get on, seriously skinny leg and ankle is unforgiving to a large footed gal

8-Not for the gal who doesn’t like to wear a thong or g-string

So what’s the verdict? These pants are fucking HOT! Will haunt your dreams and you will never look at your favorite pair of skinnies in the same way again…

Get em here

Melt my heart out

I am quite a fool love me twice or kill me four times but a picture is indeed worth a 1000 words just take a look at this:

Burning Down the House: Building a Feminist Art Collection

Carrie Mae Weems (American, b. 1953). Untitled (Man Smoking/Malcolm X), from the Kitchen Table series, 1990. Gelatin silver print, edition 5 of 5. Brooklyn Museum, Caroline A. L. Pratt Fund, 1991.168

Until April 5, 2009
Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, 4th Floor Burning Down the House: Building a Feminist Art Collection is an exhibition of nearly fifty works focusing on recent acquisitions and major loans, including works by artists such as Kiki Smith, Tracey Emin, Tracey Moffatt, and Lorna Simpson.

The exhibition title refers to the idea of the “master’s house” from two perspectives: the museum as the historical domain of male artists and professed masters of art history, and the house as the supposed proper province of women.

Most of the paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and videos in the exhibition are by self-declared feminists and artists of later generations working within the historic framework of feminist art. The widely diverse forms and ideas on view suggest that feminist art is not limited to a specific look or reading.

Among the works on view are Carrie Mae Weems's Untitled (Man Smoking/Malcolm X), 1990, which explores human experience from the vantage point of an African American female subject; a "femmage" painting by Miriam Schapiro titled Agony in the Garden that pays homage to Frida Kahlo; a haunting print by Kara Walker of a self-empowered heroine from the American antebellum South; and a “bunny” sculpture by Nayland Blake that challenges constructions of masculinity. Among the important loans from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections is one of Hannah Wilke's major sculptures, Rosebud, from 1976.

Burning Down the House: Building a Feminist Art Collection is the latest in a series of exhibitions in the main temporary exhibition space of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. The exhibition is co-curated by Maura Reilly, founding curator of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum, and Nicole Caruth, independent curator and former Manager of Interpretative Materials, Brooklyn Museum.

Vertical Cities Hong Kong / New York

Hong Kong and New York are the world's iconic vertical metropolises. Both island cities with perfect harbors, they evolved from colonial ports into dominant centers of international finance and commerce. As they grew, each embraced the skyscraper as the principal instrument of modern urbanism.

Building on the work of the exhibition New York Modern which showcased New York's emergence in the twenties as the preeminent skyscraper city, Vertical Cities will examine the parallels during two major development booms and defining moments in the vertical identity of each city: New York in the 1920s and 1960s and Hong Kong in the mid-1980s-1990s and today. During these periods, each city grew rapidly to its peak populations of around eight million, ascended skyward, and became ever more dense. In both, development was largely entrepreneurial and speculative, producing their wildly competitive and heterogeneous skylines.

Many of the visionary ideas that New York architects proposed in the 1920's came to fruition decades later in Hong Kong. Raymond Hood's or Hugh Ferriss's ideas of tower clusters linked by high-speed public transportation can be seen now in Hong Kong projects like the International Commerce Center, and the elevated walkways, multilevel transit, and mid-level escalators echo Harvey Wiley Corbett's dream of multi-level transit. Hong Kong, in many ways, can be seen as a "hyper New York," where the ideas and dreams of New York's early 20th century architects were enacted and surpassed.

Despite their similarities, the Asian and American cities differ significantly in their geography, history, and culture in ways that affect their vertical expression. Today, Hong Kong has surpassed New York in terms of the number of high-rises, population density, efficiency of mass transit, and government master planning. The exhibition will introduce American audiences to Hong Kong's typical high-rise forms, including vertical retail malls and multi-use towers that stack and mix commercial, retail, and residential functions, the city's uniquely slender buildings, and the housing estate high-rises reproduced by dozens in developments in the New Territories. Using photographs, architectural drawings, models, computer animations, and films gathered from architects, developers, universities, and government sources, the installation will highlight outstanding individual projects and evoke the collective energy of the Hong Kong skyline.

The Skyscraper Museum is located at 39 Battery Place, New York, NY 10280. The Museum shares a building with the Ritz Carlton in Battery Park City, at the southwestern tip of Manhattan. Nearby landmarks include Bowling Green, Battery Park, and Castle Clinton.

HOURS
Museum hours are 12-6 PM, Wednesday-Sunday. General admission is $5, $2.50 for students and seniors.

15 Healthful, Green Reasons Why You Should be Having Sex... Right Now!

Eric Leech, New York, NY on 02.10.09

From my experiences as a sex columnist, it just never seems to amaze me of all the healthful reasons for having a plentiful sex life. The most recent Durex Global Sex Survey shows that there are unfortunately a number of countries that could use a little more effort in this arena. One of the most notable is the United States, which is quite frankly having a lot less sex than just about everyone in the world, and when they do finally get around to it, less than half are satisfied with their experiences.

Okay folks, this is serious. Sex is a very important, fundamental part of life. It is both healthy and green in many ways. How is it green? Who can deny the fact that a healthy individual treads a lighter carbon footprint by requiring a minimal amount of prescription drugs, less medical procedures, and has an all-around better attitude towards the environment and its inhabitants. So to help me get my point across, I am going to explain 15 glorious reasons why we should be doing a little less stressing, eating, and watching TV, and a whole lot more frolicking under the sheets!

1.Natural Stress Relief-

Stress is a leading cause of sickness, yet most people are practically bathing in it daily. Sickness leads to doctors, prescription medicines, countless miles spent driving/flying to specialists, none of which are particularly the most pleasant or good for the environment. This is especially important to take heed during the difficult economic situation we are facing at the moment. We need to take a break from all this stress and allow the body to unwind. Sex is one of the best ways to do this, and it is just not the act that is stress-free, but the wonderful afterglow which can sometimes last for hours!

2.Heart Health-
According to a study at Queens University in Belfast, men who practice sex at least three times a week can cut their risk of heart attack and stroke by a lean and mean 50 percent. That's is a lot of guys!

3.Healthy, Drug-Free Baby Delivery-
Some pregnant women tend to shy away from sex as the weeks get down to that big day. However, truth be told, healthy sex throughout a pregnancy has been shown to sometimes help aid in a speedier labor and delivery. This can sometimes be just the boost a woman needs to tolerate a natural, drug-free birth.

4.Natural Cure for the Common Cold-
I bet you didn't know that sex was actually a natural immunity booster for the common cold. Wilkes University in Pennsylvania has reported that having sex a minimum of once or twice a week can boost the immune system by up to 30 percent. Imagine what three or four times per week might do for you!

5.Healthiest Diet Plan You'll Ever Start-
Today's diet plans involve special dinners and drinks in wasteful packaging, over the counter pills, medical procedures... hold the phone folks! Just one 30-minute roll in the hay will burn off a minimum of 200 calories. Some positions can burn as much as 700 calories, it just depends on how wild of a monkey dance you want to get down with.

6.Simple, Clean Energy Booster-
Sex in the morning can often boost your energy level, but relationship expert, Scott Haltzman claims that the testosterone secreted in a man's seed can actually be absorbed by women and give them even more of a pick-me-up. Now I am not forgetting about the importance of safe sex, but if you are in a safe relationship that will allow such practice, this is just one more reason to get freaky before you start each day.

7.Natural Mood Improvement-
Sex can improve on a bad mood almost as much as a handful of chocolates can. Perhaps this is one of our main attractions to the post-argument make-up romp. The tactile stimulation in sex and sensual massage has a way of easing all those tense nerves which can stay indefinitely unless you make a conscious effort to rid yourself of their devious nature.

8.Skip the Aspirin, Prescribe Sex Instead-

The simple act of sex can releases enough oxytocin in the body to reduce the necessity or frequent use of some prescribed pain relievers for arthritis, headaches, and even menstrual cramps. Please, can we do it tonight honey? I've got a headache!

9.Reduce Depression without the Drugs-

Depression and sex can be a catch 20/20 because depression causes a lack of a libido, which reduces the desire to have sex. But if a person can get past that mental block, sex has been shown to boost their entire outlook on life by making them feel better about themselves and the world around them. They just have to get past that initial blah factor and allow themselves to be open to the idea of sex again!

10.Regulate Menstrual Cycles Naturally-

Some women use the pill to regulate their menstrual cycle. Without it, their periods are just all over the place. However, research at Columbia and Stanford University has suggested that regular bouts of sex can help regulate a woman's cycle when they engage in it at least one or more times per week. The more the better!

11.Better Communication with Your Partner-

I know... sometimes men can be a real bear to communicate with. We can't sit still, we don't know what to say. Well, throw him in the sack for a good romp, and I guarantee he will be more receptive to a heart-to-heart. Sex has a way of bringing a couple closer to each other not only physically, but also mentally. It can help drop those barriers which have been holding you back from expressing yourselves to each other.

12.Have Sex Now, so You Can Continue to Have it Later-

Just as the old saying goes, use it or lose it, the same goes for sex unfortunately. All the healthful and green benefits of sex we have discussed so far, are all dependent on you keeping your bodies testosterone production in good practice. It's just like riding a bicycle, some say. Yeah, but have you ever got on a bicycle after not riding for several years. I bet it wasn't quite the same experience!

13. A Better Nights Rest-

Sex releases endorphines, which enable the body to engage in a deeper more restful sleep. A long nights sleep has long been connected to better overall health. Are you beginning to see just how much sex and your overall health interconnect here?

14.Slows the Aging Process-

A healthy sex life may in fact help slow the aging process just enough to help us be less reliant on prescription drugs and other medical procedures later in life.

15.Reduce Disease of Sexual Organs-

Regular orgasms for men have been shown to reduce the chance of prostate cancer. On the same token, the increased blood flow to the pelvic region for women has been shown to help keep their oven and all its parts in good working order too!

See... sex is good for you and for the environment too! So drop whatever you are doing and... But before you get up to that, take a brief moment to let us know what other green and healthful reasons I might be missing. Let's see if we can get this list up to 50!

Next Stop: Harads' Tree Hotel

Modern housing has climbed on trees, with tree housing - living the Tarzan way, becoming a statement of style and creative living. Offering a luxurious retreat in the lap of nature, Swedish architectural firm Tham & Videgard Hansson Arkitekter have designed a unique tree hotel that will take the tree housing concept to new heights. Featuring glass walls and surface reflecting the natural surroundings, the Harads’ tree hotel with a small kitchen, terrace, living area and sleeping area is good enough to spend a small, or even an extended vacation, away from the hustle and bustle of crowded city life.

A few of us might judge this design as stupid in aesthetically aspect or perhaps it was mostly designed specifically for shock value but I must admits it most be quite an experience to lodge in this tree hotel.
